Seriously...I see a lot of wedding mags and this one is worth your money.

So, if you've read my blog here...you know I'm embracing quality, not quantity. Here's another reason why January has been so good to me.

Erika (my bridal client) doesn't know that she was just what I needed last Saturday (and an omen for the year ahead, I feel), along with her mom and bridesmaids, and a little banter from Rick. I've never cried laughing so hard about a certain spanx situation or about someone's eyeglass Rx. Let's just say there would have been 3 blind mice in the room, if it weren't for *powerful* eyeglasses and contact lenses. What a lovely group, and I'm so thankful they were mine.

To making lots of gorgeous brides in 2012, Cheers friends.

Much needed updated favorite Vendor's List

You know, the things on your to-do list that keep getting pushed to the bottom, further and further down, till they number like 187 and they used to be #3.

Updating the Vendor's List is just that task for me. Some of the vendors had moved on to other things and I needed to move them off my list.

I did add Videographers. If any of you know me, you know I love Celia over at the newly re-branded Momentus Films and her twin look-alike, but not really related, Joanna at Diva.

Let's see...I added Brian at Myrtie Blue (a new arrival in the past few years that has really made his mark on weddings in the Panhandle), Kent's Special Events, Elegant Tents, Dine by Design, Rolland's Beauty Bar, Weddings at Gulf Place (the fantastic new venue headed up by Christina at Fete Events), and several more!

Natalie + Wade in Southern Weddings Mag

For vendors, it's always fun to go through wedding magazines and see whose work was featured, who really outdid themselves, who created a great ad, etc. I like seeing when the vendors down here in the FL Panhandle make it into the real wedding features. I know there are other great markets, for sure, but I am a huge fan of the wedding industry businesses in these parts.

I saw a few familiar faces in the latest issue of Southern Weddings. There were two ads I did makeup for--one was Carillon (love Avis & Victoria!) and one for Gulf Place. Gulf Place is a fantastic new venue on 30-A with a huge green and easy access to the beach side. The fantastic Christina Gillon of Fete Events is the wedding planner for the venue.

And finally, Natalie + Wade's wedding at Watercolor. Natalie and her mom were so fun to work with, but it wasn't hard work, you know. ;) Tec Petaja of Tec Petaja Weddings was the photographer. The girls at SW Mag provided a very comprehensive vendor list.

If there's one thing I know about Southern Weddings, it's... pick up this mag at your local Target, or here. You may think you know what's inside since you follow their blog daily, but you don't. Yep, they'll surprise ya every time!

Two Very Exciting Posts!

Don't you always get good news in bundles? Today, I got the sweetest email from one of my sweetest clients, Louise. This was a fun crowd, with a sense of humor and lots of love for their friend about to tie the knot!

Louise may be a classic, traditionally styled bride (with a side of preppy), but she's also got a little sass. Check out her modeling the pocket in this gown. Clearly, JP is being schooled on the stylish features.

Like a deflated balloon

I won't lie, when I opened my sample box this month for Birchbox, I felt like a deflated balloon. I wanted fun, shiny stuff, not lotion, a tiny gloss and some breath mints. Humph. I left it on the kitchen table.

Later in the week, I threw the lotion and mints in my center console with disregard, and the gloss on my shelf.

I haven't circled back to the lip gloss or other items yet, but I have to tell you... I ration out that lotion now, and I LoVe my new mints. A) They're tea mints for fitness, ok? ok. B) I don't like super minty mints, so these are perfect for me. You can taste just enough green tea and mint, sort of like a Zen tea from Starbucks in a mint form.

There you have it. I promised an unbiased review. It passes with a B. I'm not sure what would have given it an A+. Maybe next month...

I hadn't, until I clicked on one of the Daily Candy links that show up in my In-Box each morning. BAH-Rilliant idea. Each month, for just 10 bones, you get a box of super fantastic samples. Automatic renewal by month or sign up for a year, build up points to spend on full size products, beauty on my doorstep--and I don't have to do a thing! And I could give these sample boxes as a gift for 3, 6 or 12 months. Sold!

Uh, literally, I meant Sold. I'm signed up and ready for my delivery. I'll keep you posted on what arrives and how I like the products they send. If you decide to sign up, I'd love to hear from you! It's been a year(ish) since I made a life-changing decision regarding Two Fishes.

Have you ever made a decision you knew would give you freedom and improve the quality of your work-life, but at the same time make you miss all the things you used to complain about? It's ok, I realize that sounds completely irrational. I'm of sound, mind and body, promise. It's just that my concept and business grew way too fast, and left me wearing all the hats necessary to get through the day.

There comes a point in a creative person's life, where the craft loses out to the daily business tasks, leaving said business person to regret doing the craft in the first place. That's when you have re-evaluate, re-calculate and re-wind to start over.

A year later, I know I am in the right place and doing exactly what I'm supposed to be doing. Previously, we had 4 teams of hair & makeup girls (including me) who traveled almost every Saturday of every month. That's a lot of brides, moms and bridesmaids. I remember every Saturday, finishing makeup at a wedding, and on the drive home, I would check in with Connie to make sure all the artists were at their assignments. Then I'd call the girls to check on how everything went at each of their events. I had notepads on my passenger seat in an attempt to capture all of my random thoughts and to-do list additions. With so many moving parts (and people), you have to stay on top of the details. I remember going all day without stopping --drive & talk, makeup, drive, more makeup, return calls, and on and on. I remember being so thirsty by the time I sat down in my car at the end of the day, I'd guzzle a Dasani Water Bottle in seconds--hot. (isn't that gross?)

During a random conversation, a very wise friend of mine in the wedding business explained what life was like when you revise your business plan to be meaningful and focused on what you do best instead of trying to be "Large & In-Charge."

So, in May of last year, I wrote to all the girls that I was moving forward in a new direction. Two Fishes was going to just be Renee Armour. That's all. A one woman show now. I secretly hoped that with this change, my Friday nights would morph into a calm, relaxing time at home instead of me worrying that everything would go ok for the 5 weddings the following Saturday morning.

The bottom line was that I wanted a more meaningful connection with my clients. I didn't want to be so busy and distracted that the day didn't mean anything to me other than my appointment time to show up and work.

Earlier this year, there was a moment when it all sort of came together--when I was thankful I had slowed down enough to enjoy my work and the people around me. Gwyne of GwyneMark Photography caught it on film.

Looking forward to a fantastic Fall Wedding Season with lots of these hugs ahead.

Watercolor Weddings

We're always thankful to have a Watercolor Wedding on the books. As a vendor, I could fill your ears with lots of reasons why this is a great place to get married (vendor list is A+++, Cheryl rocks, customer service is AL-ways great, the boat house alone, and there's just good energy), but in this case...the pictures do it justice!

Rae & Wes of Rae Leytham Photography shot Kara's wedding. I'm only including a few pictures of the bride and groom--there are so many more great shots over on their blog. They also include a full vendor list.

Ok, last one (for now). Paige will always go down in history as the bride whose false individual lashes blew off her eyes just as her photog, Ryan from Pure 7 Studios, showed up to start shooting. Oh yeah.

My workday persona has been described in the past as calm, soft voice (ie, monotone and could possibly put you to sleep), chilled out, handle what's thrown your way--but not at Paige's wedding. No. We decided that since it was such a gorgeous day, Ashley and I would work out on the screened-in porch overlooking the Watercolor downtown area. It was so nice outside---and the fresh air was just what everyone needed. However. (Long Pause.) Later in the day, as I was finishing up Paige and somewhat concerned about time, the wind kicked up. I don't lie when I say as soon as I laid down her tiny individual lashes, they would blow off. The whole scenario had me wound up--mainly because the glue is black, if it hits the skin, it has to dry before you peel it off or else there's a huge mess, then there's a spot where it takes off the color I've already applied, then you have to cover the spot, re-apply the lash, hope it didn't fall in anyone's drink, and all the while I feel like the photog needs her to get in her dress. So, then Ryan says to me in his 'teacher-dad' voice, "calm down, it's fine." Shew. I calmed down, we finished and as you can see, she's a stunning bride with plenty of lashes.

And one more that just makes my heart sing.

Las Vegas Baby!

Emily and I were invited to come out to Las Vegas for a little dice rolling, hair rolling, to paint the town--and to paint a certain face! Her name is Susie. She's the Programmer over at the Wedding Chicks. We love Susie for so many reasons, and they have nothing to do with her ability to mind-read, or code a site or patience when designing marketing materials! She's helped give a voice to my style, to the way I wanted certain things branded, and I swear sometimes she beamed herself into my head, Star Trek style, to deliver just what I wanted, but didn't know I wanted. Yeah. That good.

Dede's new blog and lots of our brides!

Like a lot of wedding pros, I caught my breath from the 2010 Spring Wedding Season in July and am now back in work mode. On my to-do list was to scour each and every photographer's blog for pics of our bridal clients--and let's just say, I put it off a bit. Big, overwhelming tasks like that make me reach for a glass of wine verses the laptop. Eek.

This time, I wanted to start off on a happy note, someone who always makes me smile--and that's Dede at Dede Edwards Photography! Totally surprised---Dede has this really cute new blog filled with her latest work. There were lots of new weddings, but I think Dede has cornered the market on Senior portraits! Those girls & guys are so lucky--no more looking out fake windows or leaning against a big, prickly oak tree!

Beth

I have to say I loved Beth and her mom, Anne, from the start! They were real, down-to-earth and fun. Anddd...she chose my most Favorite location in all of 30-A. It's 38 S. Charles Street in Alys Beach. Hands down, the best. Beth had her reception at 38 S. Charles, and the couple stayed there for the Honeymoon. Smart cookie, that Beth.

Sarah

Sarah had a huge party over at the Embassy Suites in Destin. Really fun girls with a super cute flower girl! Sarah's skin was this beautiful Porcelain tone--loved it!

Songkhla

Songkhla's family was fairly large and we ended up being there quite some time finishing up hair and makeup. Songkhla's details were so fun, and different--lolly pops, a short wedding dress, purple shoes and a bouncy jump castle!

This was my favorite find of the day. I think this is a somewhat calm rendition of Dede at work, maybe because there's music playing and you can't hear Dede cutting up. Nonetheless, it's so worth posting!

Airbrush Makeup

It's definitely the newest, hottest, latest in makeup these days. There are the advocates and the naysayers--I'll let you be the judge! When a client chooses airbrush at Two Fishes, we only use the gun for foundation; not for eyes, cheeks or lips. Now...I've had airbrush done on the eyes, cheeks and lips and I've played around with it a lot. I'm here to tell you-it's not pretty for brides. Just my personal opinion, though.

If you're undecided about airbrush foundation on your wedding day, here are a few Pros and Cons. The only way to rule it out, though, is to try it. :)

Where do I start? I'm loving so many things about these pics! Anna, our client from Decatur, AL, was married last month at the Seaside Chapel. She Knows how to take a picture. Let me just say that.

I love her veil, I love her makeup (she did it herself!), loved the dress, the flowers and Christina rocked out some gorgeous hair!

Here's another thing I loved...her photographers! Wes + Tera= Armosa Studios. Great style, great writing on the blog...and she signs her posts Be Happy, and Love Each Other! Ok, yes, I love that, too.

Nothing makes me more proud than when one of our girls does great work. It sounds corny, but I celebrate each beautiful face they make. I love it when I hear the bride and their artist connect.

We're just starting to get pictures from the photographers from work done by our new additions--Tricia (makeup), Kate (makeup), Jamie (hair) and Taylor (hair). As they come in, I'll be updating the portfolio---and our blog.

Here's Lauren. I'm loving this face, Tricia...so natural, yet defined. Great work, great bride. (And more to come---Kate did the bridesmaids.)

I had to include it. If you're thinking about doing Super 8mm...this film will put you over the edge. So good.

It's been one of my favorites all year, too. It's funny..Nita's laid back with a quick sense of humor, but in this photo--she just *gave* it to the camera, no? Love that.

Ever heard of a Paper Airplane Exit?

Down here in the Florida Panhandle, it's Naval Aviation and Air Force Country. In Pensacola, we've got the Pensacola Naval Air Station, aka, The Cradel of Naval Aviation, with several air fields dotted along I-10. Then, there's Hurlburt Field, home to the esteemed Air Force Special Ops Command. Right down the road, you'll find the largest Air Force base in the US, Eglin. And we're not done. Panama City's Tyndall Air Force Base trains fighter pilots, and pilots for the funny looking helicopters you see flying down the beach on 30-A. We're military-proud down here, and practically everyone we know is involved with Uncle Sam.

So leave it to this crowd to come up with a "Paper Airplane Exit"! Is that not the funniest thing?!

As I searched through blogsites of my favorite photographers, I came across this idea from the cutest bride in Tuscaloosa. Genya and Wesleyann of VUE Photography--oh, only 2 of the cutest, funnest, most talented all-girl duo this side of the Mississippi--shot the wedding.

I love this idea--something about the names of your very best girlfriends being inscribed on your sole, or soul if you like, as you walk down the aisle. Just sweet, I thought.

And frankly, this photo warms my heart. Sweet baby girl, she's down with the team.

More Weddings Unveiled Love!

We couldn't be more tickled! Weddings Unveiled published Christina and Dan's wedding. There was certainly an All-Star line up for this one with Carillon Beach as the venue (Carillon Weddings is the on-site coordinator), Nouveau Flowers, Townsend Catering, Confections on the Coast, and Rae Leytham Photography.

Christina was a joy to work with, and from what I understand, this wedding ceremony was a very long time in the making.

Christina at Nouveau Flowers did this double-tiered, low hanging vintage chandelier with colorful place setting cards tied on the rungs of the chandelier. So precious. I love a hand-written element! Two Fishes had the pleasure of working with these two sisters, Tara & Katy. While I only spoke to them by phone for booking purposes, I have to say, they immediately made me laugh! I knew they were going to be fun to work with, and Christina agreed! Christina was the hair stylist for the shoot; the girls did their own makeup. Amanda Suanne Photography captured their sweet, fun personalities--take a look...

I remember first seeing Amanda's blog---and loving that she posted who made the bride's shoes in the credits section! So cute. (ok, and soo important!) Bridal Makeup Hot Product List

If you're a makeup enthusiast, then you probably know and love Mario D., the makeup artist genius behind Kim Kardashian's amazing look. A while ago, he blogged about his favorite products for brides and I wanted to share them with you. For the full post and more fun makeup tips, click here. {All of the commentary below is from Mario's post.}

Photo Finish Foundation Primer by Smashbox. This is a really good primer to use all over before you apply your foundation. It helps keep the makeup last longer and keeps it smooth.

Secret Camouflage by Laura Mercier. This concealer had 2 shades that you can mix to get the perfect match for your skin. Go a little lighter under the eye and for blemishes, match the exact skin color.

Loose Setting Powder by Laura Mercier. This is good to set your foundation and concealer. It’s very silky and sheer and has a bit of light reflecting which helps to smooth fine lines and imperfections. Try putting a bit of it on a velour puff and applying it that way. Great to touch up with also through out the day and night.

Orgasm Blush by NARS. It’s a peachy pink with shimmer and just looks beautiful and so many skin tones. Brush it on the apples of your cheeks (try not to go too low on the cheek with it).

Dior Bronze – Amber Tan by Dior. A matte golden bronze shade of bronzer. Brush it all around the frame of the face to warm your skin up. Don't forget to apply some to the neck too!

High Beam by Benefit. This is a luminescent complexion enhancer. Apply it on your cheek bones for a dewy glow. I like to use it on the center of the lip too for a highlight and on the bridge of the nose.

Silk Eye Shadow Wash by Stila. It’s a water-based liquid-to-powder eyeshadow in a shade called kitten (pinkish gold tone) It looks great on a lot of skin colors. Use it on your eyelid or to highlight.

Powerpoint Eyepencil by MAC. This pencil is great for a wedding because its waterproof but you can still blend it nicely for a smokey eye. Also great for the inner rim of the eye. After applying on top lids, brush a little translucent powder over it and apply again. This will give the line a lot of pigment and really pop.

B-Dazzle by GIELLA. The perfect shade eye shadow for the inner corner of the eyes. Makes you look more awake and gives that “angelic” look. GIELLA can also custom blend it into a pencil. http://www.giella.com/

The Fall Issue of Southern Weddings Magazine is on newstands across the country! We're doing cartwheels over here at Two Fishes--the Watercolor photo shoot is featured in a 14-page spread! You just have to go pick up a copy, or buy one here. It's chock full of beautiful images, ideas and inspiration! The excitement is totally contagious over there at SW! The other night, while cooking supper, I received an email from Emily A. over at Southern Weddings. Needless to say, my husband had to finish up supper, because I could not be peeled away from the computer! To my surprise, Emily used my quote in this cute little article she wrote. I have to say, the swing idea at a reception was a favorite. It reminds me of visiting my grandmother's house, where everyone gathered around the swing in the backyard. With a glass of iced tea in hand, we'd talk, laugh, catch up, tell stories...and just "be".

Super terrific job on this magazine, Lara + Team. We love to see you soar above.

Emily and I so enjoyed Heather, her bridesmaids and family! We laughed, they drank champagne, and Heather is now the reigning queen of "Best Getting Ready Playlist."

There are so many things that go on behind the scenes at a wedding, that no one has any idea about...except the wedding planner, that is. Shelby had her hands full with Mother Nature on this one! The wind and cold snap just would not go away. It didn't dampen this crowd, though. We were told before hand that this was a partying bunch--and they proved it to be true!

Pure 7...Pure Fabulous!

So, I sat down tonight to put together posts on some of my recent work--mainly brides who I haven't had a chance to put in my portfolio yet. It's been on my to-do list forever.

Then, I see this email pop up from Robin..."Amy :)" in the Re: line. Hmm...Amy, which Amy? Smiley face, Amy who?! Curious, of course, I stopped what I was doing, and opened the email.

Amy was one of Two Fishes' bridal clients. Robin and Christina did hair and makeup for her wedding day last month! I bet Robin's been stalking the Pure 7 Studios Blog for 2 solid weeks!

Tonight, I'm old news. Take a look at Robin and Christina's work below. These girls amaze me--they are such professionals. I can't wait to add this to their portfolio. Amy's hair piece was gorgeous, and so was the up-do. Her skin looked flawless, with just the right amount of glow, soft colors, and totally Amy's style. So Indie-fresh.

As you can tell from our website, we love the Wedding Chicks. Always have. In fact, their site was bookmarked before my husband actually proposed. They just spoke my language, you know?

I've loved watching them grow into the mega-glam blog they are now with content that is edgy and homey at the same time.

Now you can buy some of the cutest tote bags, tees, invites, stationary and signs from their super cute Shop. The best part is that almost everything they offer is custom. You choose the colors for the wording and the design part.

Well....It's a place where brides (AND vendors) can research photos, create really cool inspiration boards, blog, chat and just share. All those cool inspiration boards make me happy - what about you? What are some of your favs?

Andddd...as of Oct. 1, Abby's talks about what it's like to write a blog for a living, in her full-of-awesomeness blog, Backstage. It's geared towards people who want to know about the "business of blogging." For me, it was a way to connect with her on a different subject. Did you guys like reading it as much as I did?

Southern Weddings Photo Shoot

The next issue of Southern Weddings is due out in November! Isn't SW just filled with the best goodies!?! Well Two Fishes had the pleasure of doing hair and makeup for the photo shoot at the Watercolor Resort, a wonderful beachside community just west of Seaside, FL. As with any SW Shoot, there was quite a team of pros present! Lara's sneak peek was posted a few weeks ago.

Lauren and her bridesmaids were so much fun! Although, I will never forget Lauren's mom sitting in my chair...first of all--she's such a beautiful lady with a sharp sense of humor. As mom's, grandmother's and bridesmaids often do when they're sitting in the makeup chair, Lauren's mom began to tell me how special this day was for her. Well, all the emotion of the day had me misty-eyed, and then the more she spoke, the more her eyes welled up. All I could think was Nooo....not after I just put on Indigo Eyeliner and smudged it with N-a-v-y!! Nooo!! So, we quickly gained our composure, and continued on. It all came back when Lauren's dad arrived. I just quit packing my stuff...and got out my powder. When you can't fight 'em, join 'em.

With a Big Voice Comes Big Hair!

Recently, Emily and I were hired to do hair and makeup for Nashville recording artist and Pensacola native, Will Hedgecock who was giving a benefit concert for WSRE, the PBS station for the Gulf Coast. Proceeds of the concert went to fund their service efforts in our area. Will invited Hanan Taraby-- to sing a duet with him, and while Emily and I couldn't understand parts of the song (it was in Italian), they still managed to knock our socks off. We had chill bumps at the rehearsal and live show. It was that good!

At the end of the night, we fixed Hanan up--yes, she had a meet and greet with musician folks, but she also had a little date night with her husband! So, we did gorgeous slate grey smokey eyes with nude pink lips, and Emily did her hair like Angelina Jolie. The next day this was on twitter... http://twitpic.com/igriy - Hanan...you look cwazy!! That was so fun! Well, with a big voice, comes big hair, right?

Welcome to our little gathering spot. We're so glad you stopped by. Let me introduce everyone...first, there's Connie--Calendar Wrangler, Booking Assistant and she's my mom. And then we have Emily, Christina, Robin, and me, Renee - a bunch of gals in search of the perfect bridal hair and makeup products like Monty Python searched for the Holy Grail.

This hunt has had its crazy moments, for sure--and started long before Two Fishes existed. We've had green hair accidents during our college days, peels that rival Samantha's debacle in the hilarious SATC episode, and lipstick that made us look like death. Hey, when you're dying to try the newest, hottest, latest--who has time for questions?

Fortunately, we've lived to tell about it; we've tested everything on ourselves so that we could bring you professional advice on the best, tried and true products and tips we could find.
